Landscapes of the Lower River
Landscapes of the river change as you proceed closer to the mouth. These changes are due to salinity of the water in the area. However salinity is not the only thing creating changes along the Wicomico River. Sea level rise in the lower river is eroding immediate shorelines and is even creating receding forests that can be seen by the loss of trees along marshes; here these receding forests show the effects of sea level rise and also indicate areas that will be effected more severely in the future, particularly loblolly pine. The vast beauty and emptiness of the lower Wicomico is best seen by from the water. Coming from the upper and middle Wicomico one can note the landuse changes proceeding down the river from a more urban and industrial environment to this pristine marshland opening into the Chesapeake Bay.
