Beginners Guide
Just getting started? There are three different types of crafts to use. Below are descriptions of each type with instructional videos that teach us how to maneuver these kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddle boards.
Types of Paddling:
Kayaking
Instructional Video
There are many different types of kayaking from whitewater rafting in strong currents to paddling in a shallow lake with no tides. Water conditions are a very important factor in determining which type of kayak you will need. There are no rapids in the Wicomico River so a sea kayak will do just fine getting through the local waters. As far as the size of the boat, shorter kayaks are better for beginners because they are easier to maneuver and less effected by wind. Longer kayaks are a bit heavier, yet they can hold more gear, move faster, and keep a straight line.

Canoeing
Instructional Video
Canoeing is similar to kayaking but you have a single sided paddle and use various techniques to maneuver the boat. Canoeing is recomended for still water without current or waves. The person sitting in the bow (front) will paddle, while the person in the stern (back) will both paddle and steer the boat. Canoes are less stable than a kayak because of the elevated seat, be careful entering and exiting the vessel.

Paddle Boarding
Instructional Video
Paddle boarding is a fun way to paddle around whether you are trying to catch some big waves in the ocean or just going for a relaxing paddle through flat water. There are several different paddling positions that you can choose from depending on if you are in the mood to stand up, kneel, or even lay down. Standing up paddling gives users a great workout as well as a unique perspective on the surrounding wildlife, not to mention it is much easier to get back on a board if you fall off than it is a kayak or canoe.
